What are White Beans
White beans are small, kidney-shaped legumes, originally from South America. Today, they are also very popular in Germany, and for good reason. They have a creamy taste, reminiscent of brown beans, but retain a firmer texture when cooked. This makes them ideal for both warm and cold dishes.
Preparation
For white beans from a current harvest, soaking is often not necessary. If the beans are a bit older, it is recommended to soak them beforehand for a better cooking result.
- Rinse beans thoroughly with cold water
- Place in a large pot and add three times the amount of water
- Soak at room temperature for at least twelve hours
- Use the soaking water as cooking water for extra flavor
- Cook beans until tender in about eighty minutes
Serving Suggestions
White beans are delicious in bean soup, tuna salads with red onion, or a classic English breakfast. For example, serve them in tomato sauce with toast, bacon, sausages, and grilled tomato. For a surprising change, the cooked beans can also be briefly roasted for a nutritious and tasty snack.
Storage
Dried white beans can be stored for a long time if properly kept. Store in a tightly sealed jar or bag in a cool, dry, and dark place. This way, they will remain good for up to a year and retain their taste and quality.
